Performance Based Support of Renewable Energy Sources

The rules of a number of electricity markets encourage renewable energy production and demand response through fixed support schemes and socialize the costs of integrating this production trough grid tariffs. These mechanisms are not economically efficient because they do not rely on market-based prices and do not consider the actual costs of achieving reliable system operation. This paper presents a renewable energy support scheme which achieves a more cost efficient incorporation of renewable energy. We also assess the interaction of this scheme with demand response programs. Simulation results show that an uncoordinated support of renewable energy production and demand response leads to economic inefficiencies. Further, a sensitivity analysis with regard to the amount of in-feed and the system costs is performed.
